Many of these large silver Dutch coins found their way to the new colonies, and were common currency in 'New Amsterdam' (New York) in the early 1600s. It is said that the building of the wall that became Wall St was funded with the Dutch 'Leeuwen Daalders'. Known as 'Dog Dollars' in the USA, the Dutch daalder was the origin of the American word 'dollar'.
