Celtic Gold Stater coin. Gallo-Belgic Ambiani. Weight 6 grms.

Very rare opportunity to bid on one of the best quality Gallo Belgic Ambiani full staters you will ever see. Although this coin is not ultra rare as a type (but still very rare!), the quality of strike on this example makes it exceptional. If you are a serious collector, you will understand that this is a good strike from a new die. I have seen a number of this type turn up in West Sussex over the years, but nothing like this. The big difference being that this was found in Sussex downland chalk, and not from a ploughed field. It has not moved an inch in over 2000 years, until it was dug up.

I am not a dealer. I am a metal detectorist.

wpeB.jpg (27729 bytes) This beautiful gold stater dates from 60-50 BC. It weighs 6.25g, has a diameter of 15-17mm and an average thickness of 2.5mm. I bought it from Mike Vosper (a very reputable dealer) a few years ago. It was originally found in Kent.
It is struck from a very rich, yellow coloured gold, which looks very pure and not de-based (as many of the later ones were). The colour in the pictures is pretty accurate (on my PC, at least).
The strike is very crisp, showing excellent detail across the whole flan, but unfortunately, due to its somewhat dished shape, my scanner hasn't been able to focus on the centre of the obverse. Please rest assured that the centre is just as crisp as the edges and it is probably EF for the issue.
These coins are generally thought to have been struck by the Ambiani. Britain often supplied soldiers for campaigns in Gaul and it is now thought that British-found staters of this type were campaign pay that came back to the country with refugees.

wpe14.jpg (14594 bytes) This is a good example of a Gallo-Belgic E stater, also known as the uniface stater, also known as the Gallic War stater weighing in at 6.22g (calibrated balance). Issued probably by the Ambiani, in Belgic Gaul, and used to pay warriors fighting against Caesar in the 50s BC. This example was found in Cambs last week in the middle of an otherwise empty hill top field.
