SUPERB GOLDEN Series O, Type 40 'Fantastical Dragon' Sceattas.
Silver/Debased Gold?, 0.97 grams; 12.44 mm. Circa 710 - 760 A.D., Southern/East Anglian
mint. Obverse: A stunning standing figure, not on a base-line, with turnip-head which is
superimposed two large eyes and nose. The feet are apart and facing right, holding two
long crosses, the cross heads have pelleted ends, all within a beaded circle, with four
pellets either side of the figure. Reverse: 'WYERNE' type. a superb variant Mythical
Beast, the Fantastical Dragon left, facing back with beak-like jaws wide open, with a long
crest hanging down from the back of the head, tail poised in an 'O' Shape with a pellet
end, many pellets in field, within a beaded circle. Die axis 0. Recorded with the
Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge University as: EMC 2006.0302. M 381; S 811 variant. Good
