Zilveren penning Henry III 1216-1272

We are offering a 13th Century English Silver Hoard Coin. This coin is from the Brussels Hoard found in Belgium in the 19th Century and was held in the vaults of a Belgian Bank until the early part of the 20th Century. The coin was issued by Henry III durring the period of 1247-1272. The obverse shows the facing bust of the king; the reverse has a long cross and the name of moneyer and mint. The coin shows no actual wear but with some die weakness typical of the issue. The penny was the only coin in circulation at the time, (other than the excessively rare gold penny of which only 3-4 samples survive). The coin was still essentially a piece of silver bullion which was valued by weight. The coin was purchased from Parthenon Gallery London.

	We have recently purchased a small group of silver pennies from the estate of a former dealer and which are from the famous Brussels hoard (about which a book is soon to be published). The hoard was found in Belgium in the 19th century and held in the vaults of a Belgian bank until the early part of the 20th century. It was then purchased by Baldwin's of London who still hold the majority of the hoard. The coins were all issued by Henry 11I during the period 1247·1272. The obverse shows the facing bust of the King; the reverse has a long cross and the name of the moneyer and mint. Alt the pieces offered are as struck with no actual wear but with some die weakness typical of the issue. This group offers the opportunity to purchase an early medieval English sliver penny from a famous hoard for approximately 20 pound less than the same quality that are being offered by the English coin trade. The penny was the only coin in circulation at the time (other than the excessively rare gold penny of which only 3 or 4 examples survive). The coin was still essentially a piece of silver bullion which was valued by weight (240 pennyweights to the pound). The less scrupulous among the population at the time would shave the edges of the coin and keep the silver removed; this practice was known as clipping. To try and prevent this the long cross device was introduced on the reverse. If the ends of the cross had not survived then the coin was probably underweight and would be removed from circulation. The cross was also a useful guideline for official moneyers to cut the coins into halves and quarters which could be used as small change. This is the derivation of the words halfpenny and farthing (or four thing).

Tijdens de egalisatiewerkzaamheden gaf de grond deze, voor Nederland unieke vondst vrij. Uniek zowel qua samenstelling als qua aantal voor de betreffende periode. De totale vondst omvat ruim 1133 zilveren munten verdeeld over 4 denominaties uit de periode 1216 – 1314. Vanwege voor de veiling niet geschikte gebroken exemplaren en een aantal voor het streekmuseum bestemde exemplaren zijn ca. 70 stuks niet in deze catalogus opgenomen.
Als sluitdatum van deze vondst kan eind 13e, mogelijk begin 14e eeuw, worden gesteld. De enige vergelijkbare vondsten in Nederland uit deze periode zijn Woensel en Wamel, maar beiden van veel geringere omvang. Alleen in het buitenland zijn vondsten van vergelijkbare samenstelling bekend: zoals Brussel 1908 met 144.297 stuks, Leuven 1840 en Brugge 1866. Van beide laatsten is alleen bekend dat duizenden stuk werden gevonden. Verder de Duitse vondst Ribnietz en Kirial.
Opmerkelijk aan deze vondst zijn de nabootsingen zowel de toewijsbare als de niet met zekerheid te determineren stukken en het grote aantal ongecirculeerde stukken van Recklinghausen, waar duidelijk de techniek -grote muntstempels en kleine muntplaatjes- blijkt.
Daarnaast toont deze vondst het verschil in muntcirculatie tussen het Oosten en Westen van Nederland, doordat slechts een munt van Edward I 1272 – 1307 (lang dicht kruis) in deze viondst vertegenwoordigd is  terwijl dit type al in 1279 werd ingevoerd.
De vondst is alsvolgt verdeeld over de diverse denominaties:

Determinatie en classificatie  van deze vondst zijn gedaan door de directeur van het Koninklijk Penning Kabinet in Den Haag, Drs. H. W. Jacobi.
