Zilveren long cross penning Svend Estridsen, Lund

Hauberg 6 variant

The coinage of Svend Estridsen is overtly Byzantine in its iconography. The source of this cultural influence came from the huge amounts of Byzantine coinage that found its way to Scandinavia through the course of the Baltic-Russian-Black Sea trade routes and as payment to members of the Varangian Guard, the Byzantine emperors personal bodyguard of Viking warriors, who would return to their homeland on retirement with the savings from their pay. The most famous of these hired men was the future king of Norway, Harold Hardråde who led the Guard in successful campaigns in Sicily against the Arabs. It is thought that a huge amount of the Byzantine coinage arriving in Scandinavia came from Harald's own vast personal fortune that he received in the service of the emperor.

The obverse type is likely copied from the reverse type of the first coins of Estridsen's reign (Hauberg 7), which were themselves copies of Byzantine gold coins of Michael IV (SB 1826 [Michael V]; see M.F. Hendy, "Michael IV and Harald Hardrada," NumChron 1970, pp. 187-97). The reverse type is assimilated from the Anglo-Saxon long cross coinage. All legends were written in clear Latin letters on early issues, but they degraded over time or were written in runes.
