"Silver Riders" 1733 & 1734 Uncirculated, Gelderland 1733 en Overijssel 1734

This is a pair of Uncirculated Ducatoons dated 1734 and 1733. These coins were in Uncirculated mint condition when found in the shipwrecked remains of the Vligenthart in 1983, that went down with all the crew in 1735! These pieces were likely smuggled onto the ship to be sold in the East Indies for far higher prices than back home in the Netherlands as they were not listed as cargo on the manifest of the ship.

wpe5.jpg (48179 bytes) This coin is part of a small group of Vliegenthart treasure coins that we recently purchased. A certificate of authenticity provided by the seller, comes with each coin.
The wreck was re-discovered in 1981 after sinking in Feburary of 1735.
The Vliegenthart carried three chests of gold along with silver rider coins (ducatons) which are thought to have been smuggled on board of the ship.
