1729 NETHERLAND 1 GOLDDUCAT UTRECHT GRADED BY THE NGC TO BE MS 63

RECOVERED FROM THE SHIPWRECK OF THE DUTCH EAST INDIAMAN 't VLIEGENT HART

The Dutch VOC ship sunk in 1735 off the Dutch coast, located in 1981. Results from recent excavations are displayed in the Stedelijk Museum in Vlissingen.

East Indiamen were the largest merchant ships regularly built during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, generally measuring between 1100 and 1400 registered tons.

According to historian Fernand Braudel, some of the finest and largest Indiamen of the late 18th and early 19th centuries were built in India, making use of Indian shipbuilding techniques and crewed by Indians, their hulls of Indian teak being especially suitable for local waters. These ships were used for the China run.

(You can see some of the effects of being submerged in salt water - there are some small amounts of reddish color (tarnishing) visible on the helmet and shoulder.

THE DUTCH DUCAT IS CONSIDERED THE FIRST COIN OF THE NEW WORLD (AMERICAS) COLONIES & NEW YORK (NEW AMSTERDAM)
