Wreck of the Reijgersdaal: On October 25, 1747, the Dutch East India trader Reijgersdaal sank off the coast of southern Africa. The ship had been at sea for four months, starting its final journey from the home port of Amsterdam in Holland. While in Mexico, the ship took on a cargo of Spanish Pillar Silver Dollars which had never entered circulation. Pillar Dollars were used throughout the Dutch East India Company’s empire, especially in the Indonesian spice trade. In order to reach Indonesia, the Reijgersdaal had to round southern Africa, but disaster struck before the ship reached its destination. In March, 1979, treasure hunters Jimmy Rawe and Arthur Ridge discovered the wreck of the Reijgersdaal.
