Zilveren acht realen Hollandia

DATED 8 REALE GUATAMALA "HOLLANDIA'' 1735

THIS BEAUTIFUL SILVER 8 REALE PILLARS COIN WAS SALVAGED FROM THE SHIPWRECK "HOLLANDIA" THAT SANK ON THE NIGHT OF 7-13-1743 OFF THE ISLES OF SCILLY, ENGLAND AFTER STRIKING THE INFAMOUS "Gunner Rock" WITH THE LOSS OF 276 LIVES. IT WAS ENROUTE FROM TEXEL IN THE NETHERLANDS BOUND FOR BATAVIA (NOW JAKARTA INDONESIA). IT WAS DISCOVERED IN SEPT OF 71 BY REX COWAN WHO PROCEEDED TO SALVAGE THE WRECK THE NEXT YEAR. THIS COIN HAS A BEAUTIFUL DATE OF (1)735 AND WAS MINTED IN GUATEMALA (G) BY ASSAYER J (Jose de Leon y Loza) who was the only assayer in Guatemala, UNDER THE REIGN OF PHILIP V. IT COMES WITH A CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY SIGNED BY THE NOTED AUTHOR AND SHIPWRECK COIN EXPERTS DANIEL AND FRANK SEDWICK as well as a flip card in his handwriting.

This coin was retreived from a Dutch East Indian shipwreck that occured in 1743. The sip was called 'Hollandia' and she floundered off thr Isles of Scilly on her way to the far east.

De donkere kleur komt van het zeewater.

Philip V of Spain, 1741 A.D. Obverse: PHILIP[PVS] V D[EI] G[RATIA] HISPAN[IARVM] ET IND[IARVM] REX, "Philip V, by the Grace of God, King of the Spains and the Indies". Displays the arms of Castile and León with Granada in base and an inescutcheon of Anjou.
Reverse: VTRAQVE VNUM M[EXICANVS] 1741, "Both (are) one, Mexico [City Mint], 1741", Two hemispheres of a world map, crowned between the Pillars of Hercules adorned with the PLVS VLTR[A] motto, "more beyond.". A beautiful example from the famous wreck of the Hollandia.

The Hollandia sunk near the Isles of Scilly near England, with a treasure of more than 50,000 coins.
